Take a Call, Topsy is the fictional story of a year in the life of fifteen-year-old Topsy Baldwin, who dreamed of becoming a ballerina. We see the sacrifices she makes as she tries to find a balance between school, family life, social life, and ballet, and we watch her mature as a person as well as a dancer. Some aspects of the growing-up process may happen a little too quickly and a little too simply, but this is still a charming story. You don't have to be interested in dance to enjoy it, but if you are, it will probably be even better. Those fortunate enough to get hold of a 1947 Starlight Novels edition with a dust jacket will be treated to a beautiful cover picture of Topsy and other ballerinas performing. This alone would be a reason to buy the book, but there is also a lovely line-drawing illustration at the beginning of each of the eighteen chapters. I read this book as a teenager and when I reread it recently, I enjoyed it as much as I did then. I recommend it to anyone who likes novels about teenagers growing up, regardless of the reader's age.
